Turtles All the Way Down (A Favorite Anecdote)

Several decades ago, a well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) gave a public lecture on astronomy. He explained that the Earth orbits the Sun, and it, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast star system called our Galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady sitting in the back rows stood up and declared:
— What you've been telling us here is complete nonsense. In reality, the world is a flat plate resting on the back of a giant turtle.
Smiling with a sense of superiority, the scientist asked:
— And what does the turtle stand on?
— You are a very smart young man, very smart, — the old lady replied. — It stands on another turtle, and so on, to infinity!

Wikipedia, as usual, is full of rabbit holes on the topic.

And I'm fond of the Hallucinogen  track on the same theme
